Let the trees tell their story…
Deep in the heart of K’gari (Fraser Island), where the sand gives way to towering trees and ancient ferns, you’ll find Central Station—a lush, living museum of the island’s incredible biodiversity and cultural depth. It’s not just a stop on your itinerary. It’s a place to listen, learn, and reconnect.
Once a logging station and now a serene rainforest sanctuary, Central Station is a place where nature has reclaimed her rhythm—and she welcomes you to walk slowly through her world.
As you step onto the boardwalks that weave through satinay trees, palms, and rare king ferns, it’s easy to forget you’re standing on the world’s largest sand island. Water trickles through Wanggoolba Creek—so clear it looks like it’s not even there—and the air hums softly with birdsong and rustling leaves.
But this place holds more than ecological wonder. Central Station is also a sacred site for the Butchulla people, the Traditional Custodians of K’gari. For Butchulla women, this land was especially significant—it was a birthing place, a site where new life entered the world under the canopy of trees and the watch of ancestors.
We walk here with respect. This land remembers.
There’s a kind of hush that settles over Central Station. Not silence exactly, but a softer soundscape—filtered through bark, fern, and moss. You’ll find walking trails ranging from easy strolls to longer loops, each one leading you deeper into the living heart of the rainforest.
The most popular walk follows Wanggoolba Creek along a shaded boardwalk. Take your time. Pause often. Watch how light dances across the water, and let yourself slow to match the rhythm of the land.
If you're staying at The Haven, this is a perfect half-day trip—a peaceful contrast to the coastline’s wild energy.
Central Station is around a 50-minute 4WD drive from The Haven. It’s an easy inland journey with scenic views and occasional wildlife sightings—dingoes, lace monitors, and vibrant birdlife all call this area home.
We suggest going early in the day, when the morning light filters through the forest canopy, giving everything a soft golden glow.
Central Station is not just a rainforest walk—it’s a place to feel your feet on ancient ground. Here, science and spirit meet in harmony. You’ll learn about the incredible ecosystems thriving in this sandy landscape and feel the sacredness that lives in the roots and waters.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or someone seeking a deeper connection to the land, Central Station offers a rare experience of K’gari’s soul.
At The Haven, we live in tune with K’gari’s quiet beauty—and Central Station is part of that story. After your rainforest wander, return to your beach house for a cup of tea, a gentle stretch, and perhaps a journal entry under the afternoon sky.
